The Lego Incident

On Sunday's we have quiet time for a couple hours where we are trying to train the older boys to not come into our room unless there is an emergency...

Jay-"Mom! Mom! Emergency! Asher accidentally swallowed a Lego!"

Me- muffled sleepy voice..."What?! How big was it? Are you okay?"

Asher-(small voice) "It was an accident!"

Jay-"Is Asher going to die?" Sensing our lack of alarm...Pause...You're not going to die Asher."

Asher- "O.K."
Boys exit room.
Matt says, "it seems like they create emergencies just so they can come in here."

Later:
Me- "Asher why did you have a Lego in your mouth? What were you doing?"
Ash-"Well, I didn't KNOW I was going to swallow it!"

Even Later:
Jay at bedtime-"I said a prayer to please help Asher to not die because he swallowed a Lego."

The End.

Tango with a Diesel. *This is long, mostly to have for my personal recollection. Good pictures though.

Last Saturday our entire family was happily driving home from a camping trip when we were hit by a diesel truck. (Or 18 wheeler as my father calls it.) The driver of the truck made an illegal left turn from the right lane of the highway while we were in the left lane of the highway traveling right next to it. We think he had missed his turn on one of those u-turn connector roads, and was trying to quickly slow down and turn across traffic to make it. Matt got over on the shoulder as much as he could but the truck driver never even saw us. We were hit on the front passenger side where I was sitting and pushed down a ditch, across the median and stopped right before heading into the oncoming traffic from the other side of the highway. My legs should be crushed but they aren't. Matt's arms should be broken, but they aren't.

Matt & I both feel that his mind was blessed or quickened to be able to assess the situation and make the best choices possible in handling the steering of our van with out rolling it. The highway patrol and paramedics could not believe our van did not flip. We were able to walk/hobble away from the accident while the truck driver was life-flighted to the hospital. We were wearing seat belts. The truck driver was not.

The injuries (not including the emotional ones):

Matt: bruises and scrapes over body, air-bag burns on arm, torn ligaments in left wrist, right hand going through the windshield and filled with glass. Aches and pains.

Jamey: one tongue bit through, air-bag burns, bruises, and broken tailbone or as we like to say coccyx.

Jay, Asher & Ridge: seat belt burns across necks, a couple cuts and soreness. Matt's fly-fishing float tube "ended up" landing in front of Jay and acted as sort of an air-bag for him.

As you can see if you are still reading this we were extremely protected in this accident. All 5 of us!
It was a horrible experience, but was also filled with many blessings. The Lord was watching out for the Jeppson family on May 23rd, 2009 at 1:20 p.m.

Here is a picture story board or our car accident. Pictures courtesy of our good friend Jason W.

*Disclaimer: I know I look HORRIBLE! We had been camping and I was wearing the Jenkins' girls "Big & Majestic" T-shirt which isn't very flattering anyway. I'm so happy to have been wearing that to remember this major incident in our family's lives. *

After we had come to a stop, and assessed that we were all alive, Matt led our family in a prayer of gratitude that we were all going to be o.k. and to please bless the driver of the semi- to be alright as well. I felt comfort flood my body that we were all going to be just fine, & that the Lord was in control.
I couldn't feel my legs at this point, but the feeling began to return to them shortly after this prayer.

Me crying. Jay eating a sucker that a sweet lady stopped to give to all the boys. Treats can be very calming to children in tense situations. I can see the wisdom in having some in our 72 hour emergency kits.

I am thankful for the kindness of strangers. The two men who stopped to help right after the accident. "I saw the mini-van and knew there were children! Are you guys o.k? I'm calling 9-11." "Let me see if I can disconnect your horn." (It started blaring on impact and hadn't stopped wailing and was upsetting the boys.) He disconnected the fuse, and the Asher held onto it while eating his sucker.

Our family holding hands, walking/hobbling away. Matt could barely hold Ridge.

Into the arms of friends. Our family away from family. I am thankful for the loving rich friendships we have here in Kansas City.

The diesel.

In this one you can see the through-road where he was trying to turn onto. From the FAR right lane! We gave our "statements" to his insurance company a couple days ago, and we learned he has been released from the hospital, so that is good. So far they have been very accommodating.

Our van.

Life flight team arriving.

At the tow-yard. Emptying out our belongings. I'm thankful for friends who will empty out your car while you stand around and look on b/c you are still in shock & feel like you are in a dream.
You can't really tell how caved in the passenger side is, in this picture. I must have instinctively leaned away from the hit when I saw the huge diesel tire coming at me out the window.

Side view mirror that ended up in my seat. My window was shattered.
This is where Matt's hand went through the windshield.

And in case any of you are wondering, yes it is the SAME hand that had the copperhead snake bite last year. It has also had deep bad bites from a Moray eel, and iguana.

This picture makes me feel sick inside.

Saying goodbye to our van. It was a good car. We will be getting a "new" one soon. We already have new car seats. I don't love mini-vans per say, but I do love them for this stage of life we are in. They are so convenient and roomy. Plus this one did a DANG good job of protecting us. I am thankful for insurance.

And so I don't ever forget, I am thankful for the noisy chatter of my 3 healthy boys playing happily downstairs.

Chocolate bag time

We had a really fun date for our 11th anniversary last night. (Wow! 11 years, have come and gone so fast, I'm betting the next 11 go by even faster!)

Matt brought home 2 gorgeous bunches of tulips. They are "our flower" since we got married in the Spring and have them in our wedding pictures. Then,we went out and had a nice leisurely seafood dinner.

We shared Alaskan king crab legs (so yummy, like manna!) and fish & chips, but Matt let me have all the "best parts" of the crab legs.

We ended up getting each other the EXACT same cards! (Just further proof that we belong together.) Matt's inscription was so sweet I wanted to brag on what he wrote:

"Happy anniversary Jamey. I love you & am still very much in love with you, even more than when we got married. I know I wouldn't be happy without you in my life. Thank you for the sacrifices you make as a mother & wife on a daily basis, and thank you for always loving me & being an affectionate wife even when it's difficult (when I'm difficult.)
I love you.
-Matt"

My inscription wasn't nearly as nice or thoughtful.

We shared a chocolate bag for dessert & since it was our anniversary they brought us a complimentary mini one as well. Notice how the little one is in front of Matt. (We really did share though!) :)

White chocolate mousse, fresh berries, semi-sweet chocolate "bag" and berry glaze. We finished dinner & did a little shopping. Perfection.
I asked Matt over dinner if he enjoyed coming to our traditional place every year or if he just came because I loved it.
His answer: "both, I like coming here and I like it because it makes you happy."
...sigh.
I truly am living my "happily ever after."

Camping trip with dad

The older boys went on a camping trip with Matt this past weekend and found all kinds of creatures. One find in particular, Jay couldn't wait to tell me about...

"Mom, we found a pair of 3-toed Box Turtles mating!"

You did? Wow! What does mating mean?

Pause.

"Um, getting married or something?"

Working for peanuts.

Asher quote of the day:

"Mom, will you wipe me? Louder yelling WIPE ME!!!!!!!"

Me: Say please.

"Please, please, I will give you some cheese!"

Kindergarten Fitness Performance

Our family got to go to Jay's school to watch his grade level do a Fitness Performance. Jay's class did the "Pacer" demonstration which shows how the kids run to build endurance. Jay rocked it and was one of the last four still running at the end. At the bottom is a video of all the Kindergartner's singing part of a muscle song. My favorite part is when they say "gluteus maximus" and Jay turns around and giggles. Ridge also makes an appearance.

Jay with his darling teacher Mrs. Todd

I'm really scared mom.

This is a phrase we hear almost nightly. When we are at our wits end we tell Jay that when Asher is asleep he can get in bed with him. (Yup, big brother is the scared one.)
What do you do when little brother for some unknown reason falls asleep on the floor? Join him of course.

Problem solved.
